These architectures centralize processing and decision making at the datacenter by assuming sufficient connectivity, bandwidth and latency. As application of the IoT extends to industrial and more demanding consumer applications, the assumptions underlying cloud-centric architectures start to be violated as, - for many of these applications - connectivity, bandwidth and latency to the datacenter are a challenge. Fog and Mist computing have emerged as forms of "Cloud Computing" closer to the "Edge" and to the "Things" that should alleviate the connectivity, bandwidth and latency challenges faced by Industrial and extremely demanding consumer IoT applications. This Webcast, will (1) introduce Cloud, Fog and Mist Computing architectures for the Internet of Things, (2) explain their applicability with real-world use cases, and (3) introduce the concept of fluid IoT architectures and explain how these can be architected and built using PrismTech’s Vortex platform. The webcast will last approximately one hour. Webcast Presenter: Angelo Corsaro, Ph.D. is Chief Technology Officer (CTO) at PrismTech where he directs the technology strategy, planning, evolution, and evangelism. Abstract: The past few years have witnessed a tremendous increase in the amount of real-time data that applications in domains, such as web analytics, social media, automated trading, smart cities, smart grids, etc., have to deal with. The challenges faced by these applications, commonly called Big Data Applications, are manifold as the staggering growth in volumes is complicating the collection, storage, analysis and distribution of data. This Webcast will focus on the challenges associated with the collection and distribution of the large volumes of data which are characteristic of Big Data Applications and partly on its storage. Big Data Applications have to be capable of collecting and distributing massive amounts of data, much of which needs to be processed in a timely manner. As a result these applications need to optimally exploit networking as well as computing resources. Some or all of this data also needs to be saved in Big Data stores for further analysis, thus an effective liaison has to be created between the data distribution technology and the storage technology. This Webcast will explain the problems that OpenSplice DDS can solve for Big Data Applications, it will introduce some specific extensions designed for dealing with the throughput of several million messages per second, and finally will show how OpenSplice DDS can be integrated with Big Data Stores, such as Cassandra and HBase.
